A Hair's breadth
for Jill, & the story we have written together
& the pages before us yet to be filled
Getting in my car
off to work
half asleep
My eyes suddenly caught
off guard
by a small, unexpected
miracle--
morning sun
shimmering
in a strand of
long reddish-brown hair
suspended
from my rear-view mirror--
A door opening
just a crack
before slamming shut
again
These histories we hold
in each other's arms
and write in the silent languages of
our eyes
that keep us sane
in the dark distances of
the world's blank pages
as its winters of tears
quietly rage
In our rings interlocking
we have forged a shelter
against the blood-wind
outside, howling,
unanswered,
unable to break
the impenetrable bond
of dream's light
diffused
